Heroes of our Time
Harav Y. Reuven Rubin Shlita
They are the newest members of our shtieble and have quickly become a uniquely favoured part of the potpourri that makes our chevre the people we are. There are neshomas that have been sent into our world with special needs and have to live in safe and understanding premises wherein they can find positive input by professional guides. These neshomahs are part of Hashem’s plan for tikun of the world, and we all are participants in that great scheme. These young souls are a magnet for chesed and kiddish Hashem. They come with no guile nor pretence; they offer us the ability to reach out and help without any sort of expectations. One of our Chevra told me:
“It’s so special to hear these non-verbal people singing Adon Olam from their neshomos with a melody beyond simple words.” Our generation seems to have been chosen to have the holy task of helping so many neshomahs who would flounder in the chaos of what is called normal life if not for the help of others. Being “in the spectrum” was an expression unknown until recently. In my humble understanding, there are, in truth, many more children born with special needs. This may be caused by the unique consequences of our level of understanding. Never before have mankind had the tools available to help such neshomas. They have a nesoyon, we now have so much more understanding, and thus can share in their tikun. Mankind have limited understanding of the workings in Shomayim, but it is obvious that at this moment in time, we are all being asked to bring illumination to these exceptional souls.
I spend much time sharing with parents of special children and am amazed at their strength and endurance. These couples are the true heroes of our community. It is often the case that families are called upon to cope with a youngster who uses up all the oxygen in the home, soaking up all the resources and empathy of siblings and parents. There is no rhyme nor reason privy to us mortal beings as to whose family will be chosen to have the challenge presented by these holy souls. This is the Will of Hashem and we are meant to somehow grow through the circumstances Hashem sends us.
The entire community have to share and dare I say care, because no Neshomah can be missing in Klall Yisroil, we are each a letter in Hashem’s Torah and thus meant to share in your brethren’s pain. Time and again i have seen how these magnets of chesed have ignited wondrous goodness for those with open hearts.
Last week I was asked to place mezuzahs in a new home bought by the Kisharon Langdon organisation, especially for young people who must have constant care. A mezuzah is a silent witness to what our homes contain. As i placed each mezuzah, i asked one of the youngsters to hold onto it as well. A Mezuzah draws our attention to Hashem; these souls are living sources of the Kedusha that awakens the ahavahs Yisroel within each of us.
Let us all hear these non-verbal people singing Adon Olam from their neshomos with a melody beyond simple words. and offer every single yiddish neshomah his or her tikun for the illumination of the entire world. This is what Hashem has called for us to do, with strength and kindness.
